During excavation for a PV solar canopy installation, an 8” clay sewer line serving Maui Memorial Medical Center was inadvertently damaged. Given the critical nature of the facility, maintaining uninterrupted sewer service was essential throughout the repair.
With the downstream manhole located in the middle of a major roadway, a traditional bypass setup would have required significant traffic disruption. Instead, our team developed an alternative upstream bypass strategy, routing over 700 feet to a secondary connection point off Mahalani Street. The system was supported with redundant pumping capacity and backup measures to ensure continuous operation.
Work was performed during nighttime hours to minimize flow, allowing for controlled conditions during installation. The damaged section was rehabilitated using a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner, creating a seamless, structural repair without the need for open trench excavation.
The result is a permanent solution that restored full functionality to a critical piece of infrastructure—without impacting hospital operations or surrounding traffic.
